Seoul vs Busan: Which City for a First Trip to Korea

Our pick for a first trip is Seoul. The one condition that flips it: if the trip is a July or August beach holiday, base yourself in Busan.

Why does Seoul win for a first trip?

Because most of what a first-time visitor comes to see is there, and so is the airport most flights use. Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, Bukchon, Gwangjang Market and the DMZ tours are all in or around Seoul, and three days is enough for the core of it.

Seoul also works in any month. Busan's strongest card is the sea, and the sea has a season.

When should Busan be the base instead?

When the beach is the trip. In 2026 Busan's official swimming season opened on 26 June at Haeundae and Songjeong and on 1 July at Gwangalli, Songdo, Dadaepo, Ilgwang and Imrang. Most beaches closed on 31 August, and Haeundae stayed open until 15 September.

Busan is also milder in winter. The January mean is 3.6°C, against -2.0°C in Seoul. It is not a winter beach city, but it is a gentler place to walk around in January.

Busan is a long city strung along the coast, and the area you pick changes your journeys and your subway fare. Choose between the beach and the centre before booking a hotel.

Which airport should you fly into?

Incheon, unless you are flying from elsewhere in Asia. Busan's Gimhae Airport flies mainly to Japan, China and Southeast Asia, plus Guam and Saipan. Its additions for summer 2026 were Almaty, Miyakojima and Kuala Lumpur, all short or medium-haul.

Long-haul routes use Incheon, which resumed flights to Montreal, Calgary and Zagreb this summer. For international passengers, a transfer-only domestic flight between Incheon and Gimhae runs 39 times a week in summer 2026.

The practical answer for a first trip is to fly into Incheon and finish in Busan, then take the KTX back to Seoul or that transfer flight to Incheon for the flight home.

How do you get between Seoul and Busan?

By KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station. The standard-class fare is 54,400 won, down from 59,800 won when Korail merged the KTX and SRT on 1 September 2026. The fastest trains, the KTX-Cheongryong, take under 2 hours 20 minutes; other services take longer, so check the journey time before picking the cheapest departure.

Since the merger, high-speed trains from Suseo, on the Gangnam side of Seoul, run as part of the same network, which suits a base south of the river. Booking windows and refund rules are in the KTX guide.

How do you split a week between both?

Four or five days in Seoul, then south. Seoul first, because that is where the flight lands, and the KTX line runs down to Gyeongju and Busan without backtracking.

Gyeongju belongs in the Busan half. It is a short KTX ride from Busan, so it works as a day trip or as a night on the way down. Give Busan itself two days: one for the coast, one for the old downtown and the port.

With only four or five days in total, stay in Seoul. The train south costs most of a day in both directions, and Busan needs more than an afternoon.

Where should you book?

Pick the city split first, then the area. In Seoul, a base near a central subway station keeps the palaces and Seoul Station close; in Busan, decide between the beach and the interchange.
