Where to Stay in Jeju: Pick a Side of the Island

Which area should you stay in?

Seogwipo, for most first visits. It sits on the south coast among the waterfalls, cliffs and coastal walks, and it has a direct airport bus, so it works whether you drive or not.

The other three bases each win in a narrower case. Jeju City wins on a short trip or a late arrival. Aewol wins for drivers who want the west coast and its café strip. Seongsan wins as a second base for the east, and for anyone who has come for the sunrise peak.

Seogwipo: the coast, and a bus that gets you there

Seogwipo is the island's second city and its southern face: a harbour town with the waterfalls and sea cliffs nearby and several Olle walking routes along the shore. It is the side of Jeju most people picture before they arrive.

It suits a first visit of three nights or more, walkers, and anyone travelling without a car. Airport limousine bus 800 runs from the airport to Seogwipo Bus Terminal in 80 minutes on its published timetable, and bus 600 goes the other way round, via the Jungmun resort area, reaching Jungmun in 65 to 71 minutes and the Seogwipo KAL Hotel in 93 to 103.

It does not suit a one-night stop, because the ride from the airport is most of a morning or an evening once you add waiting time. The trade-off is simple: the best base for the days, the longest transfer at each end.

Our pick for a first visit. Without a car, book within walking distance of a stop on the 800 or 600, not just "in Seogwipo": the town spreads uphill from the harbour, and a stop at the door is what makes the base work.

Jeju City: next to the airport, away from the scenery

Jeju City is where the airport, the main bus terminal and most of the island's hotels are. Nohyeong and Yeon-dong, the newer district locals call Sinjeju, sit a few minutes from the runway: bus 800 reaches its Sinjeju Rotary stop four minutes after leaving the airport.

It suits short trips, late arrivals, early departures and car-free travellers who want the widest choice of buses. Express 111 to Seongsan passes through Jeju Bus Terminal and City Hall, the 102 to Aewol and Hallim starts at the terminal, and the 800 to Seogwipo starts there too.

It does not suit anyone who came for the coast. Jeju City is a working city of apartment blocks and shopping streets, and the scenery starts where the city ends. The trade-off is connections for character.

Aewol: the west coast, better with a car

Aewol is a stretch of the northwest coast lined with cafés and sea views, and it is where much of Jeju's café reputation comes from. It is close to the airport as well: bus 102 is timetabled at 32 to 37 minutes from the airport to Aewol.

It suits drivers, couples and anyone whose idea of a Jeju day is coast, coffee and sunset rather than a list of sights. With a car it is an easy base for the west and a reasonable one for the rest of the island.

It does not suit a car-free trip aimed at the famous sights. Seongsan is on the opposite side of the island and the waterfalls are on the south coast, so from Aewol by bus most of the island becomes a long ride with a change. The trade-off is atmosphere for reach.

Seongsan: the sunrise peak on your doorstep

Seongsan is a small town on the east tip of the island, built around Seongsan Ilchulbong, the tuff cone known in English as Sunrise Peak. The summit trail opens at 05:00 in spring and autumn and at 04:30 from May to August, and the climb takes 30 to 40 minutes, according to Visit Jeju. Sleeping in town is what makes that dawn start easy.

It suits sunrise walkers, second bases on a longer trip, and car-free travellers who want the east done properly. Express bus 111 runs from the airport to Seongsan port in 84 to 91 minutes on the published timetable, and the coastal express 101 reaches Seongsan in 95 minutes via Hamdeok, Gimnyeong and Sehwa.

It does not suit a single base for the whole island. It is at one end of Jeju, so the south coast and the west are a long way off by any means. The trade-off is the best mornings on the island for the longest days getting anywhere else.

How does the answer change without a car?

It narrows. With a car, any of the four works and the choice is about what you want outside the window. Without one, the base decides which parts of the island you will see, so pick a base on a direct airport bus and stay near its stop.

That points to Seogwipo, on the 800 and 600, or Jeju City, where the routes start. Aewol and Seongsan both have direct express buses from the airport, but they sit at the edges, and a car-free trip based at an edge spends its days on the long ride back. For longer car-free trips, split the stay: Seogwipo for the south, then Seongsan for the east, with one move between them. If you only have one base and want the far side of the island, a coach tour covers it in a day without moving hotel.

Ask whether you will drive. If yes, take Seogwipo for a first trip or Aewol if the west coast is the point. If no, take Seogwipo near an 800 or 600 stop, add Seongsan if you have four nights or more, and keep Jeju City for the night you land late or the night before an early flight.
